10 months down 2 to go

So we have been married 10 months today! Time has flown by that’s for sure. I decided to dust off a wedding gift we haven’t used yet but I had the perfect plan for it tonight. My parents use one of these and I’m pretty sure 30 years later it is was the same one that they got for their wedding so I can’t wait to start using it more after tonight.

My Great Aunt and Uncle gave us this Electric Skillet over a year ago and I was craving Salmon tonight. I had two Salmon kabobs that we bought from Giant Eagle last week sale and had some red potatoes that I thought would be good with some Italian Dressing too. Can’t you hear it sizzlin’?!

Turned out pretty good – we both cleaned our plates!

During lunch today I stopped by World Market to look at their knobs to complete my vanity. I found the perfect ones – Reese thought so too – or she thought it was a toy for her..

I’m excited about how it all turned out Smile Project complete – cross that off my to do list!

Happy Wednesday – we are half way done with the work week!

Win Win

I’ve always wanted a vanity, a space of my own to get ready at, and I wanted a unique one..

So when I spotted this gem at Goodwill a few weeks ago I couldn’t take my eyes off of it and I certainly wasn’t going to let any old ladies put their paws on it so I picked up the chair and went to the register ASAP and paid cash for it right on the spot – IT WAS MINE!! I had full intentions of redoing it and making it my own – I wish I would have gotten more detailed “BEFORE” shots but it was like a stain job gone bad..!

When my Dad was in town I took his advice on how to start the refinishing process. I understand that there are many ways to refinish furniture and this was the route I decided on!

Since I had an electric sander we bought rough sandpaper, softer sandpaper, and some steel wool. Other purchases included KILZ (acted like a primer), some paint brushes, and a gorgeous Olympic paint by the name of “Flannel Gray”.

Our bedroom has blues, grays, greens, and whites, along with the brown furniture so I thought a darker gray would be the perfect look I had in mind – and you know what if I want to paint it another color later, I can do that…!

So after the sanding, I put the first and only layer of KILZ on the vanity – let it dry and then after 3 coats of Gray Flannel (the middle color on the paint swatch) it was looking mighty good!

The hardest part was picking out a fabric to recover the chair. I went to Joanne’s Fabric with my 25% off coupon in hand (probably about 4 times before I made my final purchase). Lots of lunch break runs!

I found a lot of decent options – from yellow, to paisley, to a linen color, but the blues stuck of the most..

What can I say? I’m a blue girl at heart – always have been, and I’m thinking I always will be!

This was the winner and I LOVE IT! Plus it was marked down from $11/yard to $6/yard plus my 25% off means I purchased it for $4.50 and I was pretty thrilled. What do they say? “4th time is a charm”?

And altogether..

You might notice that the hardware is missing.. I want to find the perfect knobs to replace the hideous ones on there before and I just haven’t found them yet… For now its knobless and it works just fine! I have everything I need right here to get ready for the day, plus Ryan has the entire bathroom to himself. Win Win for The Potters!

Reese loooovveeess the vanity.. can’t you tell!?

St. Paddy’s Day and Another Birthday

Since my Dad was in town and my mom and him used to always refinish furniture I thought I would take advantage of his expert advice. We set out for Lowes to pick up some Kilz, sanding paper, drop cloth, and paint brushes. I had big plans of working on my new vanity this past weekend.

After Lowes we ran a few errands and stopped in for lunch at “The Pub” – Guinness, green beer, and some small plates for us!

We knew that the Buckeyes were playing so we headed downtown to Park Street and parked (no pun intended – ha) ourselves in front of a TV to watch the home team. Again, it was in the 70s – amazing weather for March in Ohio I’ve been told… At least we don’t have that nasty pollen that apparently is covering South Carolina as we speak..!

We went back home and we started sanding down the vanity – Reese supervised the whole process.

I have an electric sander and it happens to be one of the two power tools that we own. I bought a sander when we first moved to Ohio because my aunt gave us her Antique bed but they don’t make ¾ box springs like they used to so I tried to sand down the edges of our FULL box spring so that it would fit in the frame.. well it may not have been the best decision in the long run but it worked and here I am using the sander again! J that was a fun trip down memory lane – I’m pretty sure Ryan had no idea what he was getting into…! What can I say… I like a good project!

Sunday

On Sunday morning we headed to church, it was our church’s 2ndanniversary and it was a great service – we laughed as the pastor and other team members who started the church reminisced over the past 2 years, it truly is amazing what can happen in a short amount of time!

After church we headed to NorthStar for Brunch for the Birthday Boy! Yep – my dad’s birthday was Sunday! I was actually brought home from the hospital on his birthday – aww… 😉 Words can’t explain how good NorthStar’s breakfasts are – it deserves an entirely separate post all together.

We walked around Easton for a bit, and then headed to the grocery store to pick up some ‘supplies’ for….. SUSHI! Ryan and I gave Dad a sushi kit for Christmas last year and he has gotten really good at it – you’ll see!

When we arrived home, I headed to the garage to put the Kilz on the vanity. It is recommend so that the paint has something to stick to – I think it acts like a primer..!

I had two supervisors this time – Kdawg and his canine partner in crime! Wine and a cigar for the birthday boy!

clip_image008

The vanity is coming along and up until Sunday afternoon I didn’t have a clue what color I wanted to paint it. While we were at Easton we walked into Restoration Hardware and I saw a table that was a dark gray, blue, green color and I fell in love with it. I think it would be the perfect compliment to our bright bedspread, and light gray curtains… So we set out for Lowes again and I picked Olympic Paint’s “Flannel Gray” – I think it’s a classic color and I will be able to use it for other projects down the road.

Have you ever had to pick out a paint color – someone needs to think up a process to make it not so overwhelming – all those colors! How do you ever decide?!

On our way back from Lowe’s – a monster of a storm hit the area with hail like I’ve never seen. Don’t worry we were ok but I don’t take Tornado Warnings too lightly these days..

On to Dinner… Dad got to work and made a masterpiece! One vegetable roll with Cream Cheese, Avocado, and Carrots. Two tuna rolls with veggies and some Tuna and Salmon for Dad.
